Yoga Isn’t The Only Way To Find Peace

Hello, class, and namaste!

Today we’re going to be talking a little bit about something that gives people some peace of mind OTHER than yoga: insurance. Specifically, business insurance.

I don’t have to tell anyone that we live in a fairly litigious society – if somebody can possibly get away with suing you, they probably will. This goes double if you own a business that requires a physical location where customers enter to utilize your services or buy your goods.

I own the yoga studio where I instruct daily, and let me tell you, when I made the decision to strike out on my own, the mass of paperwork was absolutely mind boggling! In there were some helpful pamphlets about insurance for small businesses that gave me a small look into the world of civil liability.

I was absolutely dumbstruck by the number of silly things you are liable for the second someone steps foot on your property as a business owner. Stubbing a toe that causes a bad ingrown that requires surgery to fix? Liable! Your business burns down, wiping out everything you built? Sorry, that requires specialized business insurance or you get nothing!

Needless to say, after asking around a bit to ensure the veracity of this booklet’s claims, I made getting business insurance on the same priority level as finding the actual studio itself. I would not let fear of being sued or losing everything in a terrible fire ruin my calm!

That’s when I found the company I’d like to spotlight today, the Byron Galindo Insurance team. Byron is the preeminent agent for State Farm’s business insurance offerings in Santa Monica. I had heard his name passed around on the street before, and when I looked him up, the wildly positive reviews I found on both him and his team really sealed the deal.

For example, Ravi Bhatia, one of Byron’s satisfied customers, has the following to say about him:

In a boring industry, Byron has facilitated NOT boring, borderline genius solutions to solving my business insurance needs here in Santa Monica. He’s always willing to talk through hypothetical scenarios and run tests on different, creative ways to minimize insurance costs, and educate me on the bureaucratic nuances he has to deal with on the day to day. I’ve dealt with many insurance agents in my line of work, and I have not come across a more visionary person in insurance — a field that tends to attract risk-averse, don’t-ruffle-any-feathers types. Above all, though, he’s been an advocate and a friend. I’m grateful to have him in my corner.

If you own any kind of business, whether your customers come to you or you ship your product direct to them, getting business insurance will protect you from being left out in the cold when winter comes and the cold winds blow tree branches through your windows and ruin your stock. Believe me, anything can happen, and you want to make sure that whatever life throws at you, you can rest easy knowing you have great insurance to back you up.

Wine and Yoga – Ingredients For Bliss

Yoga is great for all the reasons that have been explained here in this blog. It is great for your body because it allows for extended periods of stretching and it puts just the right amount of strain so that you break a sweat and improve in strength. Yoga is great for the mind because it really makes you focus in improving what is going on inside just as much as the outside. After all, Yoga is a form of meditation that your body and mind both take part in together. This physical source of meditation is does so many great things for you! In fact, some people say Yoga even helps to settle the soul.

What is the soul? Well this is not the place to delve into that length conversation but for the sake of saying something other than “settling the soul” lets just say your soul, at its very basic form, is energy. We are all made up of it. Energy is a powerful thing that can give us strength and also drive us nuts! Luckily Yoga does help us control this energy in a way. Mind, body, and soul are supposed to be the three things that we are made up of and therefore we should all make sure all three are in order. We can definitely work on the body and mind, the soul however is something else entirely. So while Yoga can help ease a troubled soul to an extent, there is something else we recommend to really ensure your soul gets that needed easing we keep talking about.

Wine. The wonderful red or white liquid with just enough courage in it that can help us relax and also face many of our issues. Couple wine with Yoga and man do you have a dangerous combination of soul easing abilities. Is wine going to help my mind and my body? Absolutely! Everything in moderation is so much better in the long run. In fact, many doctors recommend a glass of red wine a day for the many health benefits that come along with it. So poor that one or two, possibly three glasses of wine and sit down to do some Yoga! What a great idea right?! Well that idea wasn’t hatched here. There is a winery near Los Angeles that is leading the way with a local Yoga studio to do just what we are recommending! Wine down Sundays have become common there at the winery. They love serving all the local yogis in Ventura but have become so popular that many people are making the drive from Los Angeles that enjoy the Sunday yoga class and also the delicious wine they have to offer.

Where does the Yoga class take place you ask? Their stunning barrel room!

You read that right, their beautiful barrel room that can hold up to 160 people! Good thing too. If their yoga and wine class keeps growing in popularity, they are going to need all the space they can get! So next time you are looking to find a place where you can work on your mind, body, and soul, check these guys out! If you go love the space as much as we do, rent it out! Their barrel room is available for all kinds of events! Check out their website to find out how to reserve their event space for your next party! And yes they even do weddings! Did you not see that photo above?! If you are looking for a yoga class, some wine, and even better company, visit their tasting room and barrel room the next time you get the chance.

The Floor Makes the Studio

Ever tried a warrior pose on concrete flooring? Or lotus pose on carpet? It’s tough to really catch your rhythm without the right support and support starts with a sturdy floor. Some of the best dance halls, yoga studios, and even jiu jitsu gyms all rely on top notch hardwood flooring for acoustics, rebound, and stability. Hardwood floors are starting to grow in popularity in homes as well. One could argue that wood satisfies a primal desire for a closeness to nature. The more we have become removed from nature the more we crave a return and wood flooring provides that subconscious connection. Here’s what some of the pros in the industry are saying about the trends in hardwood flooring:

Hardwood flooring has turned into an important portion of the interior decor of any modern home, today. It looks stylish, yet and posh is quite durable. Installing it is not an easy undertaking; but others require professional help, some people can do it themselves. The setup process needs sufficient skills and gear that is suitable. You are required to ensure you have both to get the very best results. You might have to manage catastrophic results, if you do not install it properly.

It’s definitely recommended to fix a subfloor before creating the hardwood flooring. This subfloor fixes supplies an improved platform for preparing the hardwood floors than concrete slabs. Subfloors also lock in wetness which can damage your amazing wooden floorings. In places that have a lot of moisture, like toilets, it’s better to avoid solid hardwood floors and set up laminate hardwood flooring. This laminate flooring isn’t a genuine wood floor but looks like it.

There are various kinds accessible the industry. Subfloors are not required by some and can be easily fixed to the floor. Some floors are nicely engineered ones that could endure a certain amount of wetness. Some have installation procedures that are complex. They might be a much better alternative in comparison with the more affordable ones owing to the truth that if properly installed will continue longer. It is advisable to make a onetime investment than on repairing your floors go for the rest of your lives.

The setup procedure is a one that is very boring and thus you should be properly prepared about it. If you are not confident about it then it is wise to hire professionals. It could charge you extra but you will not have the fear of redoing them. After creating the floor starts the work that is genuine. You’ll be necessary out the entire floor to smooth the rough spots, conceal the nails, and polish it. Finishing the flooring with all the best polish needs time. It also implies that the floor can not be used until it’s dried out.

Austin Texas Flooring

Down in Texas, one flood can wreck an entire neighborhood from floor to ceiling. Texas is no stranger to flash floods and the results can be devastating. Replacing hardwood can require so much more than just pulling up base boards, in extreme cases the foundation itself may need to be inspected for mold or water damage.

For some studios like Yoga Squared in Tustin, Yoga is more about the centering experience than the physical stretching activity. That’s why they use compression treated pine for a warm wood and woodsy smelling studio. Other studios like to use bamboo for maximum flex and durability over years. Hardwood and tile flooring in Austin is pretty much all supplied through my buddy Austin. Right name for the industry right? Anyway, his company can beat almost any price and does a better job on installation than any of the competition. Check them out.

Tasty Tuesday 1.0: Raw and Vegan Cocoa Bites

Chocolate Tapioca and Bliss combine to create these scrumptious and guilt free delights… oh and a pinch of Love.

For the crust

1 cup tapioca meal/flour
¼ cup + 2 Tablespoons raw cocoa powder
3 Tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons melted coconut oil
1 pinch sea salt

For the filling

2 cups raw cashews, soaked and rinsed
1/2 cup organic peanut butter
½ cup coconut oil, melted
½ cup maple syrup
½ cup cocoa powder
½ cup water
½ teaspoon salt

For the chocolate sauce

1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
1.5 teaspoon vanilla
1/3  cup maple syrup
1/3 cup cocoa powder
Prep Time: Approximately 1 hour

Blend all ingredients for the crust together in a food processor until it starts to come together. Press the crust into the bottom of desired pan that has been spread in coconut oil (round pie pan or muffin pan).  Place in freezer while you making the filling. Desserts will be easier to remove if pan is generously covered in oil.

In a food processor or mixer blend together cashews, maple syrup, water and salt. Mix until totally smooth, scraping down the sides of the processor as necessary. Add cocoa powder, peanut butter and coconut oil to the cashew mixture and blend them all together, scraping down again, until mixture is uniformly combined.

Spoon the filling on top of the crust. Mix all chocolate sauce ingredients and pour over filling. Place dessert in freezer for 2-4 hours

Once frozen, cut the desserts into small squares and remove from the pan. If using a silicone mold they will easily pop out. If you have a muffin tin, run a sharp, hot knife around the edges of each cheesecake, flip the tin upside down and give it a few good whacks against the counter. They should start to slowly side out at this point. Be patient, gravity is on your side. If a few minutes have passed and the cheesecakes are still refusing to drop, use a lighter to heat the bottom of the tin briefly; the heat will help release the cake.
Place the square bites in the refrigerator or freezer (I prefer them frozen and with a cup of coffee).
This recipe makes the equivalent of a 9 inch round of Raw Vegan Chocolate Tapioca Bites

Thirsty Thursday 1.0: The Juice Thing

  • Maybe you have a juicer and you need more fun and exciting recipes; variety in the vegetables and fruits you are juicing is nice, right? Of course. Carrots, spinach and celery are great, but just like with everything else, we get bored.  There are so many varietals to sustain ourselves from a boring juice experience. Not only is it healthy for our gut to consume these raw juices, the actual act of nurturing your body in this way will feed your spirit as well. The vibrancy of the colors and smells and the energy you create just by showing gratitude to your body are unparalleled.

For you, this is a no brainer and you should stop back by our page every Thursday for our #thirstythursday juice cocktail suggestions. We will put together local and wholesome fruits and vegetables creating unique and new flavor profiles for all to sample at home and share feedback. We will share samples of these creations at the studio each week as well so, if you are in Powell, Ohio, be sure to sign up for a class in the coming weeks.

Just below is our very first ‘Thirsty Thursday’ Juice Cocktail Creation. We hope you will Enjoy and Share:

Tickled Pink

-2 Fresh Beets

-1 Local Cucumber

-1 Organic Pear

-Pinch of Fresh Ginger

-Garnish with Cinnamon

  • You may have contemplated getting a juicer for quite some time and let’s face it, this is a big investment. There is the financial investment initially and the result is then the true investment; the investment in your health. Keep reading…
  • The final alternative is that you have not heard the greatest persuasions about “the juice thing”, and you need more solid information. Wherever you fall on this topic, we have put together some useful knowledge to guide you in the right direction.

The truth is, you may want to invest about $200 into getting yourself a nice juicer that will do the work and last. Just like anything else, you must look at the return of your investment. Assuming your goal is holistic health, your return on investment will be exponential. When you drink juice, highly concentrated vitamins, minerals and enzymes rapidly enter the bloodstream absorbing all of the nutritional benefits of the fruits and vegetables and giving your digestive organs a much-needed rest. There is also lots of research that shows the healing properties of juicing. Not only will juicing facilitate weight loss, increased energy levels, strengthened immunity, strong bones and a glowing complexion, it may also reduce chances of heart disease, cancer and strokes, three of the leading causes of death. A growing body of research suggests that most vitamin supplements don’t help prevent chronic disease. A synthetic vitamin or mineral is a laboratory simulation of the real thing. Natural, plant-based vitamins and minerals are more easily and completely absorbed by the body.

When should I juice? — Well, juicing works best on an empty stomach or about an hour before you plan to eat a meal. You may choose to do a juice cleanse, during which you only drink raw juices and avoid consuming cooked or processed foods. This is a great way to reset your gut and help to build healthy bacteria in your digestive system. These healthy bacteria are the very organisms that fight or ward disease and illness.

Can I just buy juice from the store? — Fresh juice not only contains greater nutritional value, it contains life. Fresh pressed juice is like drinking a natural vitamin filled with living enzymes, essential minerals, antioxidants, and natural antibiotics, which are vital for optimal health. Bottled juices are often times pasteurized which means they are heated and processed, which can kill essential vitamins and minerals. You can find fresh pressed juices at some local health food stores, such as Whole Foods Market and also at local juice bars, such as Samba Fresh. The best way to invest, though, is to do the work at home. When you put intention and time into your personal health goals, you will see results in a powerful way.

Do my fruits and veggies need to be organic?– Organic farmers use methods that minimize the use of toxins while building soil quality and protecting water quality. Additionally, buying organic supports chemical and pesticide-free practices that are healthier for our farmers and for our planet. Lastly, we feel that organic foods have more intense and delicious flavors. When eating (or juicing) for good quality energy and results, organic is always a sure bet. However it is not always available to enjoy an all-organic and locally-harvested diet, efforts towards these methods will benefit our environment and our local ecosystems tremendously.

What about Protein?– Spinach, kale, and broccoli are some veggies that are relatively high in protein. It is a common misconception that fruits and veggies do not contain enough protein. Although we have adapted to extremely high protein diets within our culture, many veggies and even fruits contain low to mid level amounts of protein. As long as you are not following a strict training and/or dietary regimen, you can attain sustainable levels of protein from juicing. You can also add a protein powder to your juices if you wish for more, but be very cautious when choosing a protein supplement as many do contain much, much more than you bargain for!

How do I know what to juice together?– Be creative. Start off with some basic favorites such as carrots, apples, celery and cucumber and then get weird about it…. make your health fun by creating and sharing the experience with friends and loved ones too. Just remember you cannot juice bananas or avocados… as they contain no juice! 😉

7 Confessions of a Yoga Teacher

What is your yoga teacher thinking? Not only do we want you to understand the message we are trying to convey, we would love to see you better understand your self. As a growing community, yoga teachers are entering a crucial period where we are under pressure to perform for the masses, yet stay true to our individuality. I will unabashedly confess where we stand.

#1. “We teach for our self.” This may sound selfish, but giving and receiving are just like breathing. We strive to give love; it gives us a meaning. YOU, our students, help us grow. Even when you feel as though you came to our class and walked away with some profound self-realization and you’re forever in our debt, we promise, you taught us more! We exchange energy with you and it’s really beautiful.

#2. “We really do see the best in everything (and everyone).” It’s about time we start to recognize the science inside our brains. Gratitude creates serotonin and dopamine, which are two chemicals in your brain that help regulate mood and emotion. These help create happiness. Most of us “yogis” call it the law of attraction! There is actual factual data that proves having an attitude of gratitude will create success, abundance and even affluence in your life and the lives of those around you.

#3. “Just like you, we face fears and struggles.” However, we are quick to see that these fears and struggles are illusions and the greater mission is to not allow pushback and resistance to and from these fears. We practice yoga so we can create these deep inner struggles, blocks, challenges and tensions on our mat, so that when we step off of our mats, we can see and appreciate the easy, steady flow that life naturally allows. I have seen people having huge life struggles walk onto their mat, master an arm balance that they swore they couldn’t do, and then step off their mat and make drastic strides toward figuring out where life is shifting them. Yoga shows us that the impossible is actually highly possible when we believe.

#4. “We spent entirely too long creating a playlist.” When framing a class, creating a soundtrack seems so crucial as it is created to help you tune out and focus on your own breath work. The right speed and tone for the transitions of each part of the class can be a pure art form. It brings much joy and a sense of completion when a playlist is mastered in length and form. We love when you love our music. Music speaks to some on a soul level.

#5. “We believe in you.” When we say, “next time you will get it”, it’s because we know you have the ability, but there is some resistance that YOU have created that hinders you. Students can be their own worst enemy, holding back with self-imposed limitations. However, us teachers know that with PRACTICE, you will get there! Yoga is a path, not a destination

#6. “We have to be extreme in the way we approach our spirituality.” This is very connected to us putting our physical practice on hold while we study you and yours. Yoga is a uniting of one’s self, a connection of spirit to body. When we give up our personal physical practice, we generally feel the need to balance this shift out by connecting deeper spiritually. What a great trade-off. This is a great perk of the job. We start to delve in for the journey to our true selves, and we can and will find her/him! We are destined to be wholesome and truthful. It’s beautiful to watch it unfold.

#7. “We’re never judging your practice.” I mean never! We know how, individual and unique each body is. We know your needs are different than the one practicing next to you and the one who was there before you and whomever steps foot into the studio after you. Our only concern is the health and safety of your body. We will coach you, but you need to feel the postures for yourself. Relax! You look great and you’re doing yoga! You made it to class! We’re so proud of you already. You have no idea that with consistency and an open-mind, you will soon be teaching us! (See confession #1.)
