It all started in hot yoga class. I could not stop staring at my instructor. How did she make it seem so effortless? How did it look so natural? And how did she do it all in a hot sauna?
No, I wasn’t thinking all of this about her yoga moves. (Although she does have incredible strength and form.) I was staring at her eyebrows. They looked so perfect and I didn’t understand how that was possible. A hot yoga studio is incredibly humid and it gets so sweaty that no one would ever attempt to wear brow makeup, let alone any makeup!
When class was over, I said “Namaste” and thanked the universe for giving me the strength to get through another gruelling class. I then went over to my instructor to compliment her on her eyebrows. “Oh, thank you! They’re microbladed!” she said.
Whoa, I was fascinated! I grabbed my mat and towel, hopped into the shower, and got into my car. On the way home, I wondered what life would be like to wake up with perfect eyebrows. I spend nearly twenty minutes every morning filling in my eyebrows with makeup. It takes this long because I have a scar on one of my eyebrows from walking into a tree branch when I was young and dumb. If I don’t fill them in at all, I look like I have no eyebrows. My eyebrows are also naturally very sparse, so I practically have to draw them in every morning, being as gentle and precise as possible so that I do not walk out with eyebrows that make me look like an angry or confused caricature.
As soon as I got home, I googled “San Clemente microblading” and came across Lift Permanent Makeup. I did some research and learned that microblading is a form of tattooing. Using very fine blade strokes, technicians create brow tattoos that appear like realistic individual brow hairs. After reviewing the gallery, I gave them a call and booked my appointment.
The owner of the salon obtained her training from Daria Chuprys Beverly Hills and Huntington Academy of Permanent Cosmetics. I was pleasantly surprised to see that she and I share an appreciation for symmetry and a love for interior design.
I arrived at the appointment excited, but a bit worried about the pain. I have never gotten a tattoo before, so I wasn’t sure how this whole process would feel. I was kindly greeted, and then my future permanent eyebrows were measured and an outline was mapped out with care. Microblading uses an artistic technique to ensure that your new eyebrows will appear balanced and integrated with your face. Numbing cream was then applied.
I would describe the feeling to be discomfort, but not pain. It was surprisingly manageable. Once the blade strokes were complete, the ink was applied and massaged into the skin. The dye was then wiped off, with the ink remaining only in the skin where the blade strokes were made. It is highly recommended to avoid caffeine on the day of your appointment, because that can increase blood circulation. I abstained from my daily coffee that day, and I ended up not experiencing much bleeding at all.
I can say, without exaggeration, that microblading changed my face – and my life. Words cannot describe how confident I feel wearing no makeup and how amazing it feels to wake up every morning with gorgeous brows. I highly recommend it!
